RCMP's federal watchdog launches probe into complaints of racism related to pipeline protester arrests
Michelaine Lahaie, the chairperson of the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission for the RCMP, said the agency was launching an investigation into the activities and operations of the RCMP E Division unit called the Community-Industry Response Group at several protest sites including the Coastal GasLink pipeline protest on Wet’suwet’en traditional territory and the logging protests at the Fairy Creek watershed.Start your day with a roundup of B.C.
Lahaie said the investigation will also include looking into whether the officers’ actions are consistent with the standards and expectations under the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples , the British Columbia Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act and the calls for justice from the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Inquiry Article content
