The calls came as the state released video showing the fatal shooting of activist Najee Seabrooks by Paterson police officers.

, local social justice organizations called for a federal investigation of the Paterson Police Department.

”Justice for Najee!” the crowd chanted in between speakers who demanded the police officers involved in the response should be fired and charged with murder in the second degree. In addition, they called for the U.S. Department of Justice to take over the Paterson Police Department and appoint a federal monitor to oversee it.

The answer, Hamm said is that the police union doesn’t want it and the state legislature, at least so far, won’t allow it. Hamm said nothing will change unless people organize. The state Attorney General’s Office, which is investigating the police shooting, said it was Seabrooks who dialed 911 at 7:43 a.m. that day. When officers arrived, they were told by members of his family that he was hallucinating and behaving erratically.

Members of the Paterson Healing Collective, the nonprofit anti-violence group to which Seabrooks belonged, have said police at the scene denied them access to their colleague, begging them to come to his apartment. Authorities said Thursday responding officers told Seabrooks that his work mentor could not come into the apartment due to safety concerns.
