One player had a racial slur directed at her while another was called 'homeless' because she wasn't wearing basketball sneakers.
girls basketball players endured racial slurs and taunts about their socioeconomic status from opposing players during a game Wednesday afternoon in Barnegat, the lawyer for the Lakewood board of education said.
Barnegat Superintendent Brian Latwis said the comments should have been brought to the attention of the referees and coaches during the game “so they could be addressed immediately” and not by Lakewood first issuing a statement to the media. Barnegat is located around 40 minutes north of Atlantic City.
The attorney added that the district plans to purchase basketball sneakers for the 10 girls on the team who don’t own proper footwear. There are 19 players on the roster, the attorney said. The NJSIAA said it doesn’t have jurisdiction over the incident because it took place at a middle school game, not a high school game.
