The Milken Institute Future of Health Summit is wrapping up, but there’s still time to receive exclusive coverage and key takeaways of the summit from ddiamond. Sign up now.

Over two days at the Ritz-Carlton, PULSE chatted with interesting innovators at the coffee bar, dueled with doctors over payment reforms and pressed government officials on their plans.

Take Dan Liljenquist, the chief strategy officer at Intermountain Healthcare and the co-founder of Civica Rx, a nonprofit generic drug company. With hospitals grappling with critical medicine shortages, Civica's plan is to produce or procure the drugs itself — and sign long-term agreements with hospital systems to guarantee markets for them.

Evidation Health CEO Deborah Kilpatrick, on a Tuesday panel, said digital health researchers and data wranglers “truly need people to repeatedly be able to reconsent their data in a clear way. Privacy is about intention, about what is being done with my data. That leads you to the need to reconsent people repeatedly online.”

At the Milken summit, political appointees also showed honesty — and flashed humility. Take Joe Grogan, the White House's key budget official on health care, who spoke about finding a way to lower the price of "durable therapies" — basically, high-cost medicines that provide a long-lasting cure. But changing how opioids are prescribed doesn't fix a core public health problem, which is that millions of Americans are still wrestling with isolation, illness and stigmas that prevent them from seeking care — all of which contribute to addiction.

Back in 1900 — the birth year for the cohort who would be 65 when Medicare was enacted — life expectancy for a white man was 47 . And those white men who did make it to 65 could expect to live just another 12 years. Manson painted a dire picture of aging in big cities: Older people are being displaced by younger newcomers, she said. For the poorer residents — the bottom quintile — there are some programs to help. But middle-income older families will have problems.
