Watching Rian Johnson’s new TV show the way Rian Johnson wants
writer-director says, are “high-quality shows that you didn’t need to binge an entire season of to enjoy”. That is an incredibly attractive prospect for anyone whose inbox is filled with news about TV: there are reboots and revivals and spin-offs and American versions of English versions of Dutch shows. A series which has been designed to be dipped into? Johnson has played a winning hand., Natasha Lyonne’s frazzled sleuth Charlie Cale can always tell when someone is lying to her.
Sevigny, Ron Perlman, Jameela Jamil and Nick Nolte pop up. It’s a thrilling, dizzying carousel, and though not all these characters are created equally, they all fulfil their requirements: you miss them as soon as they’re gone. The other draw is Lyonne. If you don’t like her schtick – raspy, rambling, comedian-on-the-verge-of-the-breakdown, steer clear. But if you’re into it, you don’t really need anything else. If anything, the show leans a little too much on Lyonne’s energy. Johnson is a talented writer-director, who knows how to please his fans He is not, I would venture, a great comedy-writer. There are some good jokes , and many boring ones about generational divides .
In fact, early on, I sometimes found myself enjoying Johnson’s craft more than the show itself. Such admiration can be a little distancing, and I suspect it’s that feeling that madeis ten episodes long, which should let you fully sink into Johnson’s ‘70s aesthetic, the sheer volume of story ideas, Lyonne’s rattled humour. Full immersion helps. So yes, you can watch it in any order. And you don’t have to binge it. But maybe, just this once, that might be okay.
The first four episodes of ‘Poker Face’ are available now on Peacock. A UK release date has not yet been announced.
