Saanich Inlet Protection Society collects 711 signatures in support of a review.
A group pushing for an environmental review of the Bamberton aggregate quarry expansion plan is not waiting by the phone for a ministerial decision.
“Frankly, it is an ask that should not be needed,” Olsen said in a statement. “The Ministry of the Environment did a comprehensive study in 1996. It stated clearly that the precautionary principle should be applied when considering the expansion of industrial activity in the Saanich Inlet. Michael Simmons, vice-president of the society, said since the public engagement period closed, the society has asked to meet Environment Minster George Heyman, but have been told that will not happen.“It was highly orchestrated, tightly controlled and resulted in no useful dialogue between the proponents [quarry operator Coast Mountain Resources, the Malahat First Nation, the society] and the hundreds of residents who are gravely alarmed by these proposals,” he said.
During the public engagement period, which wrapped up on Feb. 21, the Environmental Assessment Office suggested the permitting process in the ministries that the quarry project must pass should be stringent enough to mitigate concerns and assuage any fears.
