There is no need whatsoever to renegotiate the Safe Third Country Agreement with the United States.
Indeed, Canada should be doing more to help. Accepting more overseas claimants — for example, from United Nations refugee camps — without requiring prior travel to Canada. Providing greater support, without relying on the exceptional generosity of individual Canadians. Holding more expedient refugee determinations, to quickly enable legitimate asylum seekers to build secure lives in Canada and remove those with unfounded claims. .
Even assuming that the U.S. is safe, though, Canada has no international obligation to return refugee claimants to it, even if they arrive at regular border crossings. The STCA simply allows Canada to do so and obligates the U.S. to process them if this occurs. Canada’s “public interest” clearly supports eliminating tens of thousands of annual unlawful border crossings, for state sovereignty, rule of law and other reasons.Article content
