Pat Stay died Sept. 4, 2022, after he was stabbed inside Yacht Club Social, a bar on Lower Water Street in downtown Halifax. Stay's family is suing the owners of the bar, saying they failed to take reasonable steps to ensure the establishment was safe for patrons. - Steve BruceHALIFAX, N.S. — Rap artist Pat Stay’s family has filed a lawsuit against the owners of the Halifax bar where he was fatally stabbed just over a year ago.

The 36-year-old Dartmouth man stumbled outside the nightclub before he collapsed on the sidewalk. He died a short time later at the Halifax Infirmary.Adam Joseph Drake of Halifax was arrested six days later in Upper Tantallon and charged with first-degree murder, meaning police believe the killing was planned and deliberate.

The statement of claim, filed pursuant to the province’s Fatal Injuries Act, names a numbered company and I.C. Shore Halifax Distilling Company as defendants, saying they were owners of Yacht Club Social and were responsible for the supervision of employees and patrons. The plaintiff further claims the defendants knew or ought to have known Drake had a propensity to consume alcohol to intoxication, caused his intoxication by serving him alcohol, and knew or should have known he “was a dangerous and reckless individual who was a danger to other patrons.”

“Had appropriate safety and security measures been taken by the defendant establishment, he would be here with us today."
