Michael King continues to expand what is expected of him; Joe Musgrove vs. Max Fried coming up

Fans gave Padres starter Michael King an ovation as he walked off the field after the top of the seventh inning in Tuesday’s wild-card game against the Braves. Even when he does something like what he did last night, becoming the first pitcher to strike out 12 batters, walk none and allow no runs in a postseason game.“I think I dreamed of a perfect game instead of a few hits that I gave up,” King said afterward. So is leaning into the pressure of a postseason game.

“He’s got the stuff, the pitch shape and the command,” Dylan Cease said last night. “When you put that all together you get a guy who goes out and does stuff like that consistently.” While King fell short of his preposterous innings goal in the regular season, he passed the mark last night. He was the Padres’ most consistent starting pitcher in the regular season, giving them 14 quality starts. That was two fewer than Cease. But King also had just seven starts in which he gave up three or more earned runs, which was eight fewer times than Cease.

Depending on how long the two League Championship Series go, the seventh game of the World Series could be on Oct. 30.Tatis gave the Padres an early lead with a two-run homer on the anniversary of his two-homer wild-card game in 2020. “Very special to see him do that knowing he’s not 100%,” Xander Bogaerts said. “You can see the way he is running sometimes, he’s not at 100. But I think Fernando at whatever percent he is, is better than a lot of guys at 100.”But now the Braves have Max Fried going today with Reynaldo López available if the series gets to Game 3. And they were able to reset what was the major leagues’ third-best bullpen this season.

The left-hander was drafted seventh overall by the Padres in 2012 and was four months removed from Tommy John surgery when the team traded him to the Braves in December 2014 as part of the Justin Upton deal.
