Star right fielder expected to provide a boost for team that thrived while he was on the injured list
San Diego Padres right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. runs out to the outfield during their game against the Detroit Tigers at Petco Park on Monday, Sept. 2, 2024 in San Diego, CA. The spontaneous eruption of noise that arose from those inside Petco Park when the second player in the Padres’ batting order was announced Monday afternoon was loud as any that is ever heard outside of a big hit late in a game.
There was a sense of excitement, for sure. But there was also within the team an effort to normalize the day.“It feels amazing, especially with what this team has been doing and how they’ve been taking care of business,” he said of being back in the lineup for the first time since June 21. “I’m really excited to come and just join the squad. … Just add a little bit more into what this group has been doing.
“He’s one of the best players in the league,” Jake Cronenworth said. “He brings what he brings. It’s going to be awesome, especially with what we’re doing right now.” “It’s not 100 percent, but I’ve been cleared from the doctors and I feel good moving forward,” Tatis said. “I feel really confident, and I feel like I can do anything out there in the baseball field.”
“The gait may look a little different. … He’s able to play. He’s the one driving this. Obviously, medical weighs in and we’re responsible adults with him, but he’s ready to go, and we’ll just take it day by day.”
