Padres lose a game, add a reliever; Joe Musgrove has ambitious timeline; Manny Machado takes a ball to the head
Padres pinch runner Tyler Wade, right, slides into Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson to break up a double play attempt in the ninth inning Sunday. The Padres dropped a game at the conclusion of an excellent trip, during which they won seven straight and lost only at the beginning and end. You can read my game story if he wants me to get one more and then come back at four innings,” Musgrove said.
One factor that could make the option more intriguing to the Padres is if they cannot land a starting pitcher by tomorrow’s deadline. They could, perhaps, pair Musgrove with Jhony Brito for a game or two as Musgrove continues to build up. “The initial reports are he’s in a good spot,” manager Mike Shildt said. “… We don’t expect anything serious, but I’m sure they’ll continue to make sure and be thorough with the testing.”
“I thought I heard some cheers,” Machado said Saturday. “I mean, the fans have always adored me here and really took me in as a young kid when I when I came up as a 20-year-old. … So that was a lot of emotions.” “A lot of great memories here,” he said. “This is close to my heart. So it’s always gonna be good memories, always good to come back. … It’s a different experience. When I came here in ‘19, it was a little bit too quick. I didn’t really have time to process it. Now I think I’ve played more years in San Diego than I did in Baltimore.”
“I think it’s just the way the game is,” he said. “You get a lot of singles, then you get a lot of extra-base hits. They come in bunches. They tend to do that. I don’t like to have them spread out, but I wasn’t complaining one bit about the singles. I wasn’t getting anything .” If Solano is still here after the trade deadline, it will be interesting to see whether the Padres start him in one of the two games against the Dodgers. Cronenworth has started 17 consecutive games and all but one of the past 66. He is tied for second on the team with 14 home runs and is second with 60 RBIs, but he is batting .133 over the past 11 games.
But to get to the postseason, what is more important is that they continue to take care of business against losing teams.
