Over 2,000 trees to be planted on Blackpool estate as part of mini-orchards plan

A project to green up Grange Park will see 2,000 trees planted on the estate this winter including fruit trees with the mini orchards accessible to all.

Pauline Taylor, senior ecological officer at Groundwork Cheshire, Lancashire and Merseyside, said: “At the moment we are putting in big standards which are mostly fruit trees. These are mini orchards on small areas of green space and everyone will be able to pick the fruit.”Residents are involved in the project, which is based at the @the Grange community centre and it is hoped this type of engagement will help ensure newly planted trees are not vandalised.

“Residents around each pocket of trees we plant are taking ownership of them, and there are lots of people trying to green up Blackpool at the moment. Also we are supplied by a company from Southport which means the trees we are planting have been grown in a similar climate and so have a much better chance of flourishing.”

A spokesperson for the Trust said: “Together with another young volunteer, Stacy, the Civic Trust helped to plant 10 trees in a single day. The same number had been planted by Groundwork and a different group of volunteers the previous day.
