Increasingly, we call them “expensive” neighbourhoods, because the rents and home sale prices are sky-high due to so many people wanting to live there.
The great “15-Minute City” idea is that more neighbourhoods should be like that, offering their residents the same amenities and choices. The same freedom. That’s it, really. , some readers wrote to rightly complain that in Scarborough you generally have to drive a long way to find one. The great bitter subway-LRT fights of the 2010s were dominated by rhetoric about why suburban residents deserved the same access to fast, convenient transit as those downtown. So many traffic discussions involve appeals for mercy for those living in less expensive neighbourhoods who have “no choice” but to drive.
