Even as we continue to grieve the loss of Hazel McCallion, we can look to her remarkable life for guidance and inspiration. In particular, our current and aspiring leaders should learn from the former Mississauga mayor, who served more than 35 years in political office.Make connections that go beyond the campaign

. Every leader takes to the campaign trail at election time, making speeches and chatting with voters. But after the vote is counted, some leaders cut themselves off from the people they serve. They surround themselves with aides or buddies. Some even cater to these insiders. Hazel put a priority on staying in touch. That meant attending events, taking phone calls, and talking frankly with people, even those who disagreed with her.

Regardless of whether our current and aspiring leaders share a political ideology with Hazel McCallion, they can — and should — learn from the principled nature of her leadership.
