The leaderless Ontario Liberals is now verging on irrelevance, writes Bob Hepburn.
More than 100 years ago, American author Mark Twain wrote: “I was seldom able to see an opportunity until it had ceased to be one.”Indeed, the party is now verging on irrelevance as it dithers over its pending leadership race and wastes the lone opportunity it has had to spark interest in the party since it was humiliated in last June’s provincial election.
Importantly, the Hamilton meeting was to be the first step on the party’s long road back to respectability. Organizers hoped the event would not only re-energize party loyalists, but also rekindle interest and respect among the wider population. “The Executive Council of the Ontario Liberal party is having ongoing conversations about our upcoming leadership race. Further details on the process for selecting a new leader for the Ontario Liberal party will be communicated at a later date,” a party spokesperson said.
