Opinion: As knowledge grows, autism organization evolves in name and support yyc

Autism is a neurological disorder. It tends to affect communication and social skills. And it is a spectrum. Some folks may have very slight manifestations, such as difficulty understanding social cues. But autism can also extend into an inability to communicate or make eye contact, diet and sleep issues, anxiety and frustration, which sometimes results in self-injury or lashing out against others.

Our old name was groundbreaking at the time. In the 1960s, children with autism were often institutionalized. As the base of science and knowledge around autism grew, however, it became clear that with the right services and supports, lives could be changed and autistic individuals could thrive. Our message at the time was not to underestimate people on the autism spectrum because “treatment” worked.

At some point, it became inevitable that the word “Treatment” in our name would no longer be a fit for our evolving agency. Treatment is synonymous with the medical model of disability. We wanted to embrace a social model of disability, supporting what people can do and removing barriers.
