'We are hanging on by our fingernails month after month after month': vice-president of the Happy Valley-Goose Bay SPCA
Bonnie Learning, vice-president of the Happy Valley-Goose Bay SPCA, would like to see the animal shelter receive more core funding to help ensure it can operate all year long. — ContributedHAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, N.L. — When it comes to caring for homeless animals, Bonnie Learning says there is only so much that is humanly possible.
Falling short of that, Learning said the SPCA in Happy Valley-Goose Bay will have to stop accepting new animals by the end of October or early November, if not earlier, and shutter its doors altogether once all remaining animals have been placed and its financial and administrative business has been wrapped up.The administration of the shelter is working on trying to secure core funding through various entities it hopes might be able to provide continuous annual donations.
“We have our fingers crossed, but that’s $30,000 less we’ve had to work with this past year,” said Learning. The Happy Valley-Goose Bay SPCA expects to take in around 500 animals by the end of the year, if it can manage to stay open that long. — ContributedThe SPCA in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, which has been in existence for 24 years, is a little different than others in the province, Learning says.
The shelter in Labrador also takes on the expense of sending kennels to anyone who has an animal that needs to be shipped to the shelter.
