Annapolis Valley farmers are breathing a sigh of relief after surveying the damage caused by post-tropical storm Lee.Nova Scotia Fruit Growers AssociationLee made landfall on Long Island, Digby County, on Sept. 16. Winds were recorded at 93 km/h in Greenwood and 56 km/h in Kentville.

“It depends on where you look. Some areas, there’s crop damage and other areas are almost untouched from Lee,” he said. “We’re just feeling pretty lucky that we’ll get to pick them off the trees and put them in the bins,” she said. “People are seeing this year that the sugar levels are a little bit elevated for the time of year so there’s been some picking started a bit early this year.” Almost all of Nova Scotia’s grapes go to wine production with a small portion used for table grapes. Ells said the polar vortex in early February will have a multi-year impact on vinifera vines, which produce wines like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
