“Sheer panic,” Peirce said of what rushed through his mind, “but knowing it’s got to be a controlled panic so that the kids don’t see you panic. I don’t think I’ve ever been more scared or worried than that in 17 years of coaching.”Hickman was rushed to a hospital in Baytown, where he was put on pain medicine.
Doctors wanted him to return two weeks later for a follow-up. If it was discovered that Hickman had an entrapment under his eye, he would need surgery.Hickman did have a lower orbital fracture. He had double vision. Badly.“At the beginning, I thought I’d be fine,” Hickman said. “My dad knew a guy who’d had an orbital fracture before and he said the double vision went away in two weeks. I was super optimistic. But week by week by week by week, it was still there.
