NEW GLASGOW, N.S. – The Sydney Mitsubishi Rush began the first-round of their Nova Scotia Under-18 Major Hockey League playoffs with a loss to the league’s top team on Friday night. The No. 8 seed Sydney was defeated 9-3 by the No. 1 seed Weeks Majors of Pictou County at the Pictou County Wellness Centre in New Glasgow. The Majors lead the best-of-five series 1-0.Sydney, Cape Breton West hope physical style of hockey can lead them past top contenders in under-18 playoffs
Cape Breton Eagles prospect Lane Lochead led the way with a goal and three assists, while Cade Moser and Ben Wallace had a goal and two assists. Clint MacLaughlin, Drew MacKinnon and Lane Sim had a goal and an assist, while Kingsley Austin, Logan Roop and Reese Smith added single makers for the Majors.Majors’ Colby Brown made 29 saves. Sydney’s William Stonehouse stopped 16 of 24 shots before being replaced by Johnathan Coombs, who allowed one goal on 11 shots.
Game 2 of the series is slated for Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Pictou County Wellness Centre.
