Mike Black, owner of the Black Spoon Bistro in North Sydney displays the cash only sign now at the front of the restaurant. The bistro switched to cash-only this week. GREG MCNEIL/CAPE BRETON POST - GREG MCNEILNORTH SYDNEY — Faced with the choice of paying higher prices by flashing their plastic card or saving a few bucks by bringing cash for their meal, Black Spoon Bistro diners have chosen the cash option.

The decision to move away from plastic and digital payments was something Black began to mull over about six months ago. “Again, I know it is not ideal. I hate the fact that we are inconveniencing people to do it but I have to try to do what I can do to keep the doors open and dig out of the hole.” The Black Spoon Bistro has a staff of more than 17 employees. Some staff members, from the left, are Nakia Gracie, Nicole Catrone, Tory MacKinnon, Ryan Jardine, Colette Deveaux, Nick Target, Melanie MacRae, Lloyd Day, Machaela Black and owner Mike Black. GREG MCNEIL/CAPE BRETON POST - Greg McNeilCustomers settling in for a midday meal at the bistro had little issue with the new cash-only policy.

Once people realize that keeping menu prices down is the main reason for the move, Ross is sure future customers will have no issue with the cash-only policy.
