The President of Spay Day HRM Society says the region is facing a new cat crisis. Linda Felix says more animals are being surrendered due to landlords bringing in no-pets policies.

“Apartment buildings are being sold and then the new landlords are declaring suddenly that the building is pet-free,” says Felix. “Tenants have the option to give up their pets or move out.”

Felix recently took to Facebook to draw attention to the issue. She posted a photo of a cat named Carlos saying Spay Day had the “heartbreaking” job of accepting him from a crying boy and his family.Skye Bryden-Blom/Global News “Carlos was just the icing on the cake,” she says. “That day we had already taken in three other cats from homeless situations. He was the fourth.”“We are experiencing higher call volume than normal and it’s typically from people who are moving, needing a home for their companions,” says Bide Awhile Animal Shelter Society Executive Director Liesje Somers-Blonde.
