Safe Watch was announced in a news release by NGRP on Aug. 17, although it's been in the works for a while. Chisholm said that NGRP was inspired by a similar program the Charlottetown Police Service implemented in 2015. He added Charlottetown did a lot to help them develop their CCTV program.
Charlottetown’s Police Chief, Brad MacConnell, was asked how the program has been going in Charlottetown since its implementation. He said it has helped them police much more effectively. He said that the CCTV cameras will not be watched 24/7. Instead, police will use the data and information collected from the cameras in the case of an incident.
Chisholm acknowledged that CCTV isn’t a replacement for in-person police measures but is instead to support investigations when needed. She added that safety has become a bigger concern with more people moving into New Glasgow’s downtown core.
