The Deptford Township School District announced the cuts Friday in a letter to parents, stating the decision would save the district over $1.5 million.

The Deptford Township School District plans to cut busing for students within a two mile radius of their school this upcoming school year and charge parents for busing near schools in order to cut outsourced transportation expenses, the district’s superintendent

“To optimize our resources and ensure the financial stability of our district, we have made the difficult decision to reduce the number of bus stops and the number of students who will be transported to and from each of our schools,” Deptford’s superintendent of schools, Kevin Kanauss said in Friday’s letter to parents.

The district plans to charge parents $365 annually per student for transportation within the two and two-and-a-half mile radius, about half of what Kanauss says the district pays to transport those students each year, which is not reimbursed by the state. But if a student misses the bus three times and is present in school that day, Kanauss said they will lose their spot on the bus, and it will be given to someone on a waitlist.
