Two-time Oscar winner Michael Caine has announced he is retiring from acting.
Two-time Oscar winner Michael Caine has announced he is retiring from acting following his work on the recently released Second World War drama,Caine said the fact that he got to play the lead in the film that received accolades from critics after its release in Britain earlier this month led to his decision.
“I’ve figured, I’ve had a picture where I’ve played the lead and it’s got incredible reviews,” Caine said. “The only parts I’m likely to get now are old men, 90-year-old men, maybe 85. And I thought, ‘Well, I might as well leave with all this — I’ve got wonderful reviews. What have I got to do to beat this?’ You don’t have leading men at 90, you’re going to have young handsome boys and girls.
, Caine plays Second World War veteran Bernard Jordan, who broke out of a care home to attend the 70th anniversary commemoration of D-Day in 2014.“I got COVID and I was sat there and I had nothing to do. I couldn’t do any movies, nothing,” Caine said of his new book. “I’ve always wanted to be a writer and I’ve written several biographies. Then I wrote a fiction book … I’ll write another book sometime because I so enjoyed writing.
“I had a period where I thought I’d been retired. I was sent this script by a producer. And I sent it back with a message saying, ‘The part is too small.’ And he sent it back saying, ‘I didn’t want you to read the lover. I wanted you to read the father.’ “And I was 62, and I was saying, ‘That’s it. I’m over now.’ To be a movie star, you’ve got to get the girl.”Postmedia is committed to maintaining a lively but civil forum for discussion and encourage all readers to share their views on our articles.
