The answer, of course, is the PGA Tour introducing 16 designated events featuring massive purses and top-notch fields; eight events if you take away this week’s Players Championship, the four majors, and the FedEx Cup playoffs. Nothing new there. The news that broke last week was that those eight remaining designated events will, beginning next year, feature limited fields of 70-80 top players and have no 36-hole cut.
“I mean, without a doubt. Without LIV Golf, this wouldn’t have happened,” Jon Rahm said Tuesday. “So to an extent, like I’ve said before, we should be thankful this threat has made the PGA Tour want to change things.” The information that apparently lowered the temperature at Tuesday’s meeting included that there will be a clear path for all PGA Tour members to gain entry into designated events through their play. Also, commissioner Jay Monahan explained that the tour’s many simulations and models predict just over 60% of players will remain in the top-50 from one year to the next, meaning players eligible for designated events will frequently churn.
