'I don’t make any money from this, I don’t have a job here, and I don’t have kids. Sometimes, I wonder if I should just move. I’m 45 years old, and if no one’s listening to me now, will people be listening to me when I’m 75?'
An environmental activist in Sault Ste. Marie feels he's been left in the dark on a number of issues, and now, he's calling on the public to join him in defending the city’s environment.
“It takes up so much time and it drains you of every resource you have,” he says. “The reality is, for the amount of work I have to do, there’s no way I could do this part-time because I have to physically be there.” Recording and compiling all sorts of data in recent years, Rasaiah consistently fires off numerous reports to Algoma Steel, the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks , city officials, First Nations chiefs, and other dignitaries to outline his concerns.“It’s very rare for me to even get an acknowledgement, let alone someone actually responding to anything I say,” he says. “I almost have to be the bad cop all the time.
“You can have a thousand regulations, but if you don’t enforce them, they don’t mean anything,” he says. Not intending to come across as cynical or pessimistic, he explains someone has to be vocal to provide a proper balance of the situation.
