From brianlilley: Toronto's sidewalk shelter for refugees is Trudeau's shame
Deo Byarugaba, who came from Uganda just over a week ago, said his reason for leaving was simple, the government passed laws outlawing homosexuality and his life was put at risk.
“It’s safer than back home,” Deo said of his life on the streets of Toronto. “I was expecting a shelter and assistance to fit into the norms and the culture of the people of Canada.”This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Both Violet and Deo arrived at Pearson Airport, declared themselves refugees and were referred to social assistance agencies which then referred them to show up at 129 Peter St. to try and get access to a city shelter.
Chow pointed out refugees are a federal rather than municipal responsibility, but the city has beien stuck with the bill.Advertisement 5On Friday, city, provincial and federal officials will be meeting to discuss the issue, a big part of which will focus on funding. The federal government has been slow in paying their bills in the past when Roxham Road was open. And now that Pearson and Trudeau airports are the new conduits, they seem to remain slow to pay their bills.
In May 2019, there were 255 people claiming asylum at airports in Ontario, those claiming asylum at airports dropped to nothing during the pandemic but then bounced up to 415 in May of 2022.This past May, there were 900 people claiming asylum in Ontario airports, mostly Pearson, and 1,765 at airports in Quebec. While Roxham Road has been closed, the airports have apparently opened up.
