Company agrees to pay a record fine, investigation continues and lawsuits could soon be coming in massive bread price fixing scheme.
The court documents detail four counts of price fixing that lead to two price bumps for fresh bread in 2007 and 2011.
The price fixing scheme stretched over many years but only came to light after whistleblowers went to the Competition Bureau in 2015. That launched the investigation and eventually led to search warrants being executed against Canada Bread, Weston, Loblaw, Metro Inc. Sobey’s Wal-Mart Canada, Giant Tiger and Overwaitea Foods.
An email, signed by Michael McCain, then CEO of Maple Leaf Foods, describes McCain’s meeting with Paul del Duca, then an executive with grocery chain Metro. According to McCain, the two men discussed strategies for managing profit in retail.
