The party failed massively in four byelections Monday and Bernier himself failed to win a seat once again.
Bernier campaigned as the pro-life candidate despite this never having been his issue before. He posed for photos with guns in gun shops despite this never being his issue. He campaigned against the World Economic Forum despite having spoken there as a minister.
Bernier wants to portray himself and his party as the only true conservative-leaning party in Canada — instead, the PPC has become home to fringe messages, anger and distrust. It’s not a party that will accomplish anything in Canadian politics beyond sowing fear, division and conspiracy theories. Unable to gain traction, he’s tried latching on to any issue he can, even ones he never cared about before like abortion or guns. The sign in front of his podium Monday night said Maxime Bernier – A Strong Voice for Families.” That was never Bernier before and I seriously doubt it is his driving issue now beyond the fact that Bernier will adopt any issue for votes.Article content
The best story about Bernier’s hypocrisy, though, comes from 2011 when he was brought back into cabinet and named as Minister of State, Small Business and Tourism, and Agriculture.
