A new deal has been struck between the federal and provincial governments to try and save the Stellantis EV battery plant and more.

For the last three weeks there has been a standoff as Ottawa has spent more time dealing with internal politics than the deal itself, potentially souring the relationship with Stellantis and putting thousands of jobs on the line.

For Stellantis, they’re looking for the best deal and that might be coming from the United States. If the Trudeau government had no plans for going toe-to-toe with Biden’s White House, then they shouldn’t have promised to do so.They also shouldn’t have gone all-in on offering to match the American production credits for Volkswagen if they wouldn’t do the same for Stellantis.

That leadership politics would get in the way of a deal like this should be unthinkable, but it’s sadly not in the world of politics where ambition often clouds judgment..After some tense moments, it appears the internal squabbling in Ottawa has been set aside and an updated deal between the Trudeau government and the Ford government has been hatched.
