In just over a decade, we’ve gone from giving people “safe injection sites” to put drugs in their arms to buying them the drugs to put in their arms at the safe injection sites. If these programs worked as advertised, we wouldn’t see opioid deaths climb every year across Canada.. The latest extension of harm reduction programs is to give addicts a prescription for opioids considered safer than street drugs such as hydromorphone, often sold under the brand name Dilaudid. Debate over the efficacy of such programs is the latest flash point in the war about drugs.recently raised several issues that should be looked at, including how “safer supply” is creating new addicts when people sell their pills to buy stronger drugs.
