Re: “I quit my job as a public school teacher — The fight for my students against bureaucracy is impossible,” by David Newman, Tuesday Opinion.

I understand his renunciation of the politicization of public schools. At the same time, I exhort my fellow Texans to countermand this trend by electing lawmakers who respect professional educators and model trust in their work. Beyond voting, volunteer in your local school to show support and appreciation to the teachers, librarians, counselors and principals who we depend on to nurture our young people.

The truth is that potential teachers are watching what is going on in education today and are wise enough to choose early to be no part of it. There has been a long-running characterization that “If you can’t do something else, teach.” Stoltenberg and Matthews of the Institute for Policy Innovation wrote a swell opinion piece chock full of colorful similes about renewable energy and the limitations therein. They are correct on one element: We are unable, at this point, to cut over from fossil fuels to renewables with the snap of a finger. That would be irresponsible and impractical.
