The State House was built in 1963 for what is now known as the Department of Transportation. The Legislature moved into the building in 1985 in what was expected to be a temporary move. “It’s on its last leg,' said Rep. Steve Clouse, R-Ozark. Read more:
Officials at the Alabama Legislature are exploring the possibility of a new Alabama State House because of the need for costly upgrades and the limited public space in the retrofitted building that now serves as the home for the legislative branch.
In September, the Legislative Council, a 20-member panel of state lawmakers, directed Senate Secretary Pat Harris, House Acting Clerk John Treadwell, and Legislative Services Agency Director Othni Lathram to explore the idea of a new State House and have discussions with the Retirement Systems of Alabama about possibly building a State House that it would lease to the Legislature.Rep.
Albritton said he does not necessarily expect quick action on the project. The 2020 engineering report said the estimated cost of replacing the State House was $123 million. Albritton said inflation has probably increased that by 30 percent to 40 percent over the last two years. “People like to come and like to participate, especially if it’s an issue that’s important to them,” Harris said. “And we’ve got them standing in hallways, which creates a hazard just by packing the hallways. That’s not an everyday issue but when an issue comes up and people care about it, they want to be here.”
“We’ve met with them and there’s a lot more meetings to be had to talk about what this might look like,” Scott said. “But nothing concrete. We’re interested if it makes sense for RSA and it’s going to benefit our members to do it. ” But Albritton said there’s more to consider than that perception, including the idea that Alabama should have better public facilities.
