Wild black vultures in Montgomery County have tested positive for Eurasian H5 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, according to the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. This is the second confirmation of HPAI in Alabama.
Wild black vultures in Montgomery County have tested positive for Eurasian H5 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, according to the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.In February 2022, an American wigeon, a type of wild duck, tested positive for the disease after being harvested by a hunter in Limestone County.
The most recent tests were conducted after a number of black vultures in Montgomery County died, officials said. The positive results were first confirmed by a lab in Mississippi and then by the National Veterinary Service Laboratory in Ames, Iowa.State Veterinarian Dr. Tony Frazier said the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries is working with Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to investigate the findings.
