Cape Breton Eagles president Gerard Shaw said he can’t even guess how many times he went to Politte’s backyard shop to have his blades sharpened. “Back then if the palms were out of your gloves, you weren’t going to go out and get a new pair of gloves because they were too freakin’ expensive and a lot of us never had a lot of money growing up,” recalled Shaw. “So you were doing patch jobs over and over again and you’d take them up to Peter on Saturday and you’d have them back on Sunday. Especially the goalies. You remember the old brown leather goalie pads and gloves? Peter patched those up day in and day out for every goaltender around.

“Any of the big teams in town, he would do their skates. He knew the people and he knew hockey. His uniqueness was that he just had a feel for the blade and the guy that wore them — he knew what to do and what edge to put on the skates.
