There is a little mercenary in every big league player, a fact Chapman won’t deny. But just getting to that point of your career is a feat.
“I think this team is young and trending in the right direction,” Chapman continued. “It reminds me a lot of when I was a young player in Oakland. The leadership comes from putting in theory and believing and trusting in everybody pulling from the same end of the rope. It starts with hard work and desire and wanting to win.”Through the first three weeks of spring training, Chapman says he’s noticed a definite uptick in the day-to-day dedication of his teammates.
It’s a glimpse into the Chapman drive shaft that he demands more from himself and has a plan to make it happen. “I don’t really know what the ceiling is. I just know there is more in the tank and I can be more consistent and be a professional hitter.”It was an early July trip that Chapman had marked on his schedule – a return to Oakland for three games and then four in Seattle for a taste of theIt couldn’t have gone worse for the Jays, a 1-5 swing that hastened manager Charlie Montoyo’s firing and brought in John Schneider as his replacement.
