Senators and hearing witnesses sounded the alarm Thursday about an increase in serious close calls on our nation's airport runways.

The FAA says it hired 1,500 controllers last fiscal year, in addition to the more than 2,600 controllers who are at various levels of training.says it's investing millions in safety technology, such as surface surveillance systems and terminal automation systems.“Safety is so important, but it is an evolving process, and we must continually reevaluate our system to make sure we have the most safe possible in play,” he said.And Arel said significant runway incursions only accounted for 1.
Over the last decade, there have been around 30 runway incursions per 1 million takeoffs and landings.
