Labour has overtaken the Conservatives in political donations for the first time in six years as donors appear to backThe opposition party received £2,764,089 in cash donations in the third quarter of this year, part of a total £4.7m in income which includes public funding.
Meanwhile the Tories’ donation income shrank to £2,755,457 over the same period, the Electoral Commission revealed. It is the first time since spring 2016, in the run-up to the Brexit referendum, that Labour’s fundraising has outstripped that of the Conservatives.comes from the public purse in the form of so-called “Short money”, which is offered to opposition parties to compensate them for their lack of access to the Government’s resources.
Donations to Labour in the last quarter included £1.6m from trade unions as well as more than £1m given by individuals. Multi-millionaire businessman Gareth Quarry, who earlier this year switched from backing the Tories to supporting Labour, is recorded as giving £50,000 to the party.spokesperson said: “Donors are coming back to Labour because they can see we are a changed party that is serious about getting into government and building a fairer, greener, more dynamic Britain.
The party is understood to be expecting to record even higher donation figures in the current quarter when figures are published early next year. Labour lost many of its wealthy backers during the Jeremy Corbyn years and Sir Keir has sought to convince them to return to the party.
