Sir Keir Starmer has said he could not see how Jeremy Corbyn could stand as a Labour candidate at the next election.
The former Labour leader had the whip removed in 2020 over his response to the scathing Equality and Human Rights Commission report into antisemitism in the party.
Speaking on BBC’s Today programme this morning, Sir Keir said: ‘I don’t see the circumstances in which he will stand at the next election as a Labour MP.’But his re-election would rely on his personal appeal to constituents, along with the backing of his devoted supporters, who helped propel him to the Labour leadership in 2015.
Asked if he believed Mr Corbyn could stand as an independent against a Labour candidate, Sir Keir said: ‘I can only speak for the Labour Party, I can’t speak for Jeremy on this.’supports HTML5 videoMr Corbyn had his party membership reinstated within weeks of his whip being removed, but Sir Keir refused to readmit him to the group of Labour MPs.
In his initial response to the EHRC report, Mr Corbyn claimed the scale of antisemitism in the party had been ‘dramatically overstated for political reasons’. He later attempted to clarify his comments, saying concerns about antisemitism are ‘neither “exaggerated” nor “overstated”’.
