“I enjoy the difficulty and challenge it gives you because it’s not against anyone else,” said Ketchikan fourth grader Kendall Hamilton, who has joined her local Native Youth Olympics team. “It’s against yourself.”
In a corner of the Houghtaling Elementary School gym, Izabella Agoney is trying to perfect her one-hand reach, coached by her mom, Starla Agoney.
Izabella Agoney said it’s a hard one. She leans forward on both hands. Her arms shake as she concentrates on putting all her weight on her wrists. “It’s really fun,” Sophie said. “You get to learn things that you didn’t know you weren’t good at until you try it.” Sampson Oliver is one of the older team members. He’s a senior in high school and also a wrestler. He joined the team four years ago for a challenge. At the most recent practice, he was focusing on the Alaskan high kick.
Agoney is happy to see the sport grow in Ketchikan. He says it didn’t have the same presence in Ketchikan, Prince of Wales or Metlakatla as it did where he grew up.
