His speech was an important chapter in a grim story. It was clear early on that there was something terribly wrong with what was happening to Labour during Corbyn’s time in charge. Even the most modest of criticisms were met with a wall of screeching hatred. There was no sense that someone might reach these conclusions independently. They had to be part of some movement to destroy him and what he represented – from the media, or the Conservatives, or some shadowy liberal elite.
Labour had to be purged of the poison. Starmer has not finished that job but he has made a damn fine start to it. Whatever else we might say of him, he deserves immense credit for having done so.
