Nicola Sturgeon's resignation is an absolute gift to the Labour party 🖋️ayeshahazarika for ipaperviews
So, what went wrong? She was excellent at winning power but what did she do with it? The SNP’s record has been far from glowing on many important areas including the NHS and other public services, ferry services, life expectancy and drug deaths. People were starting to see that.
This has become such a vicious arena because political leaders have been too scared to take a moderate, middle ground position. The public do care about women’s safety and single sex spaces, but no-one should be rejoicing that a transgender rapist helped bring down Sturgeon. This culture war is getting uglier by the day. Politicians of all stripes need to do some work to tone down this debate and find some sensible compromises.
At a time when we are still recovering from the pandemic and in the midst of an economic crisis, this seemed indulgent and verged on student politics. Many of her supporters couldn’t explain how this election stunt would work in practical terms. Would there just be a one-line manifesto which totally ignored key issues like health, education, crime, the economy and climate change? It sounded desperate.
It is also an absolute gift to the Labour party. She was such a dominant figure that she made hopes of a significant comeback in Scotland seem hard – until now. Labour activists can’t believe their luck. And all just before the Scottish conference next weekend.
