If you have a nostalgic bent, as I do, walking through the Halifax of 2023 can be a bewildering experience. It is a terrific city that we live in, just not ...
Palimpsests, in a city that is perpetually being remade like Halifax, disappear, as three great former building forms did when one of the walls of the Dennis Building at the corner of Granville and George streets was demolished. A rendering of Dexel Developments' plan for the Acadian Recorder and Kenny-Dennis buildings, as seen from the corner of George and Granville streets shows what the finished project will look like.
Palimpsests can be things onto themselves I suppose: old stone intentionally exposed in a reno, some cobblestone visible through the divot in a city street, a former business name allowed in faded glory to be seen on the side of the modern enterprise. “It is almost like seeing things suddenly in three rather than two dimensions,” Fowler said. “You can’t unsee those patterns.”
There is something satisfying about that, according to Stephen Archibald, the urban photographer and blogger, something deeply gratifying about recognizing the layers that exist “over something that we know quite well and are peeling them back.”This peeling back of the layers, for him, happens in big and small ways.
