The man collapsed on an embankment along the west side of Route 280.
shortly after being chased by Newark police officers along a city highway was identified Wednesday as a 43-year-old city resident, investigators said.
Newark Police Officer Alberto Vera approached Raul L. De Jesus at 3:42 p.m. on Jan. 5 in the area of Orange Street and South 11th Street in connection with a criminal investigation that had occurred in Paterson on Dec. 10, according to a statement from the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office. The specifics of the criminal investigation where not revealed by the office.
DeJesus fled through several yards before he collapsed on an embankment along the west side of Route 280 near mile marker 12.8, the office said. Newark Police Officer Nicholas Miller found DeJesus. He was taken to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4:41 p.m., officials said.State law requires the Attorney General’s Office to investigate the death of a person who dies during an encounter with police. The actions of the officers will be reviewed and the findings will be presented to a grand jury to determine if the evidence supports the return of an indictment against the officers involved.
