When Robert Power and David Philpott celebrated their fifth anniversary, they were thinking about their future together.
The ceremony was accompanied by “Happy Birthday,” sung by their witness’ toddler, who wanted to share the only celebratory song he knew. But they believe in the power of the people, especially those who are too young to remember when gay couples couldn’t get married. For the next two years, the rest of the country followed suit, including Newfoundland and Labrador, on Dec. 21, 2004.
“Robert and I have been very fortunate to have enjoyed wide support and acceptance, despite the rhetoric and hate that continues to exist,” said Philpott. “Politicians exist to get elected again,” said Philpott. “The minute they are elected, they start trying to get re-elected. Politicians are constantly gauging public opinion.”
“There was no prospective mother who was sitting down with their husband saying, ‘Well, what if our child is gay?’ That wasn't even part of the conversation, but now it is,” said Power.
