“I cannot even call them a host family, they’re like relatives now and they treated us as members of their family from the very beginning. I am forever grateful for this family and for P.E.I. people.”

People were screaming. Kids were crying. Train compartments designed to hold four passengers had 16 people packed in.The single mother squeezed onto one of the trains holding her 18-month-old daughter, Tara, and a small suitcase. She had to leave the stroller behind.

Host families are vital in helping Ukrainians establish new homes here, according to P.E.I.’s Immigration & Refugee Services Association . They gave her a place to live. They have dinner together, and they were there to help navigate P.E.I.’s health-care system when baby Tara got sick.“This is one of the most meaningful things I’ve ever done,” says Jennifer Platts-Fanning while discussing her family’s decision to host Ukrainians who moved to P.E.I. - George Melitides/SaltWire Network

She and Svitlana have become close and call each other"sister." They share music, food, customs, laughter, hugs, tears, and their daughters now go to school together. Svitlana and Anna moved in with Platts-Fanning in early January. Since then, Svitlana has found a full-time job and is now looking for an apartment.

In February, about 40 Ukrainians came to P.E.I., which Harper said is the busiest month he can recall. He said similar numbers are expected in March.
