Have you heard of these things called 'keys?'

. The popular Telluride SUV is a former SUVOTY winner, the G90 from Hyundai's Genesis luxury division won our Car of the Year nod this year—you get the idea, we dig these products. However, both automakers have been dealing with"a major L" as the cool children might say, one that has embarrassingly played out in front of millions on social media.

Last year, it was discovered that certain late-model Hyundai and Kia models had a security flaw that allowed thieves to start the vehicles armed with just a USB cable. The exploit became more widespread when it became a viral meme, after a group that called itself the"Kia Boys" started recording themselves stealing the vehicles and posting the videos to TikTok.

Eventually others started participating in the illegal trend, and besides many car owners dealing with the headache of dealing with a stolen vehicle, there were at least 14 reported accidents and eight fatalities from the resulting joyrides. With such a huge spotlight on the issue, eyes turned to Hyundai and Kia for a solution to the problem that resulted from the automaker's ill-designed ignition switch.

to get on top of labor costs to install at a dealer. Needless to say, the response wasn't exactly positive., Hyundai and Kia are offering up another fix, one that this time will be free of charge. The fix will come in the form of a free software update for 8.3 million vehicles in the U.S., which extends the alarm sound from 30 seconds to a full minute and, more importantly, requires the key to be in the ignition switch to turn the vehicle on. Not only is that a measure that we reckon 8.

Oh, there's one more thing—owners will also be given a free window sticker to warn thieves that the vehicle is equipped with an alarm system. Though, we're not sure how effective that sticker will be against those who are willing to commit crime for TikTok likes.
