that are based on a list of words – perhaps stuck to the fridge – haunt the family environment and act as a constant reminder of work yet to be completed. It is not conducive to supportive learning. If the same low score comes back each week, parents can be made to feel guilty and pupils can feel shame.
Instead, pupils need to be encouraged to be word detectives themselves. I asked more than 1300 primary school teachers to find out what they think – and 76 per cent agreed that tests are an ineffective way to teach spelling. One of the main issues is that they are often used as a one-size-fits-all approach to evaluate a student’s attainments. However, spelling is a complex and multi-faceted skill that requires a deeper understanding of the structure and patterns of language.
It should be taught so that children understand the different elements that make up words, and how they are related to one another. By referencing phonology , morphology , and etymology in a clear and explanatory way, children are truly going to find success with spelling, while learning the foundations of their language. Practically, pupils work with the teacher to investigate spelling hypotheses and begin to group words for similarity and pattern.
Additionally, this deeper understanding of spelling means pupils will be able to generalise and apply it to new words. This will also aid in building their vocabulary and helping them read and write in a more efficient way. Attention should always be drawn to patterns so that children can best predict which letter representations to use. For example, “ea” often follows an “r” or “t” or precedes an “m”, for example.
The current tests force children to memorise words and the way in which the letters are grouped, but it needs to be embedded in an interactive and engaging environment. Sitting with some real-life focus words in the classroom, while making links to other words can be immensely helpful, for example linking the “sh” sound represented by the letters “ch” in
