In Houston, more people are paying high percentages of their pay on rent, income growth lags behind the state and national average and it now has the highest rate of residents without health insurance among large cities.

While Houston’s share of cost burdened households falls below that of Los Angeles, San Diego and New York, it is one of only four places that saw an increase in housing burden among the 20 most populous U.S. cities. The other three places were also Texas cities. Households in the city had a median income increase of 5.6%, just under $3,000, between 2016 and 2021 according to inflation adjusted income data. But statewide, Texans saw an average increase of nearly 9% or $5,530.. Pediatricians and truck loaders were among those with the largest bumps in pay according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
